VAYU Algae Air Purifier for Home & Desk

$159.00

A living air purifier for your desk, bedside or reception

VAYU holds three litres of live spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) in a sealed glass column. Under its built-in LED, the algae photosynthesise: they take up carbon dioxide from the air bubbled through the culture and release oxygen. You can watch it happen, as the water turns from pale to deep green over each 30-day cycle.

What VAYU does, and what it doesn't

  • Takes up CO₂. In a sealed-chamber test witnessed by Bureau Veritas, VAYU lowered CO₂ from 8,605 to 2,648 ppm in 20 minutes, a 69.2% drop. A chamber is not a room; see How we test below.
  • Brings a living, visible piece of nature into a small space of about 150 sq ft (14 m²): a desk, a bedside, a small cabin or a reception counter.
  • It is not a particle filter. VAYU has no HEPA stage, so it does not remove dust, pollen or smoke. For particles and CO₂ together, see OAK, which combines living algae with a HEPA filter.

How it works

  1. Fill the column with water, add the starter culture and one nutrient pack.
  2. Switch on. The LED and gentle aeration run continuously from a standard USB-C supply.
  3. Once a month, take five minutes: drain the tank, keep back 10–12% of the grown culture as the seed, then top up with fresh water and one nutrient pack.

The culture regrows from what you keep, so you never need to buy algae again, only nutrient packs. Sealed packs keep for about 12 months at room temperature. Spent culture makes a gentle plant fertiliser (dilute about one part in ten), or it can go down an ordinary drain.

How we test

The Bureau Veritas CPS Korea Tech test (report BVT-RQS-250058, issued 5 November 2025) measured CO₂ in a sealed enclosure using a method we specified. The report states that it was not issued under the laboratory's KOLAS accreditation. It shows that the mechanism works; it is not a rating for a whole room, where results depend on room size, occupancy and ventilation.

Our own measurements put a 2.5-litre culture's uptake at about 610 mg of CO₂ a day, roughly the same as 46 Philodendron scandens houseplants. We will send the full report to anyone who asks.

Frequently Asked Questions

An algae air purifier is a device that uses living algae cultures to clean the air. These algae cultures are usually housed within a photobioreactor. These systems harness the natural process of photosynthesis, where algae absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen (O2), for a more sustainable and effective way to purify the environment.

The Vayu air purifier is highly effective against airborne particles, including dust, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and viruses. HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are specifically designed to remove particles of all sizes, thereby increasing their effectiveness in reducing airborne infections.

Yes, maintenance and parts replacements are necessary for algae purifiers for the home. Regular cleaning and timely replacement of filters or consumable parts are recommended to ensure efficient operation.

Our algae air purifier needs refilling when the algae run out of food. This typically happens after 30 days, and you can easily know it's time to replace the algae when it starts to look less vibrant, turns a darker green, or stops removing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen efficiently.

Yes, our eco-friendly air purifier can effectively remove allergens like dust and pollen. Vayu captures airborne particles, dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores-all common allergy triggers.

Vayu air purifier reduces CO2 levels by up to 70% in minutes and removes PM2.5, formaldehyde, and TVOC. It is designed to filter out particulate matter and certain gases.

No, our Algae Air purifier is designed to be relatively quiet, with noise levels comparable to a soft hum or white noise.

Yes, you can install this air purifier in a large room, but it is important to choose one with a suitable Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) for the space. If the purifier has a higher CADR, it can clean a larger volume of air.

Yes, our eco-friendly air purifier really works in your house by improving indoor air quality and removing airborne particles as well as pollutants.

Yes, some doctors recommend algae air purifiers for those affected by allergies, asthma, or other respiratory problems. While it is not a cure-all, it helps to reduce airborne allergens and irritants and improves indoor air quality. You should be aware of the limitations of air purifiers and other measures, such as good hygiene and ventilation.

Use an air purifier during times of allergy or asthma attacks, especially when pets are in the house, or whenever you smell a pungent odor or heavy dust. Also useful when living in homes near busy roads or during bushfire seasons when smoke enters.

You can place it in the middle of the room, away from walls and furniture that could obstruct airflow, or consider placing the purifier near pollutant sources such as windows, kitchens, or wherever pets hang out.
